Darren Sammy to Replace Test Coach Andre Coley to Become West Indies All-Format Coach in April

The director of Cricket West Indies, Miles Bascombe, announced on Monday in St. Vincent that Daren Sammy will be the new head coach of the West Indies men’s squad in all formats. Sammy, who has been the coach of the West Indies’ T20I and ODI teams since last year, will take over the Test team in April 2025, succeeding Andre Coley as the test team’s head coach.

“It’s always an honor to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting,” Sammy said at the Press Conference after Miles Bascombe’s announcement.

He further said, “Coaching was never something I saw myself doing, but I must admit the way that it’s been going, I’ve developed a much stronger passion and a love for the job… I believe in processes, something that we’ve been able to do in the white-ball formats, and, with this new role, I’ve already mapped out some of the areas and processes that we’ll have to follow in order to be successful [in Test cricket]. I’m a patient man, and once I trust the process and understand the requirements from the Director of Cricket, the plan gets into action. So I’m really excited about the added responsibility and new journey, one that I think myself and my team will be prepared for.”

Under Sammy, the West Indies have won 15 of 28 one-day internationals, including four of seven bilateral series since May 2023. In T20Is, the Caribbean side won four series at home—against India, England, and South Africa—while losing to Sri Lanka and Australia (both away) and England (at home)—not including the current series against Bangladesh. Overall, the West Indies have won 20 of the 35 T20Is played during Sammy’s tenure.

Meanwhile, in tests, under Andre Coley, since May 2023, the West Indies have lost seven tests and won and drawn two, with the highlight being a dramatic eight-run victory over Australia in the Brisbane Test in January this year. However, they have not won a single test series during this period and are ranked last in the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table.
