India’s Semi Final Qualification Scenarios in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The Indian women’s cricket team has kept their dreams of progressing to the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals alive with a convincing win over Sri Lanka. India crushed the islanders by 82 runs, thanks to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s destructive batting. The result increased India’s net run rate to +0.576, placing it second behind group leaders Australia. Though India is currently in second place in Group A, and their last group game is also against Australia, which is a must-win game to secure a spot in the last four. A loss is likely to complicate matters for India.

What if India defeated Australia?

India must win their final group stage encounter against Australia or their prospects of advancing to the semi-finals will be lost. If India defeats Australia, the Women in Blue, Australia, and New Zealand will all have 6 points (3 wins from 4 matches). In that circumstance, the net run rate will determine which team advances to the last four. At present, India has a higher NRR than New Zealand.

What if India loses against Australia?

If India loses against Australia, their chances of making the semi-finals are at stake. In this scenario, Australia will go to the last four as group leaders, having won four out of four matches. For India to advance as runners-up, Australia must defeat Pakistan, while New Zealand must lose at least one of their last two group games, against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

With Pakistan also gaining four points in the process, Harmanpreet Kaur and his team should have a higher NRR than both New Zealand and Pakistan to advance to the next round. New Zealand is in a similar situation, but their current NRR is significantly lower than India’s. As a result, their chances of finishing above India are slim.
