Sri Lanka Squad for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Chamari Athapaththu to lead Asian Champions in Women’s T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka has announced their 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, led by Chamari Athapaththu. The team is similar to the one that won the Women’s Asia Cup in July, with the addition of Inoka Ranaweera.

Ranaweera last played for Sri Lanka in T20 Internationals during the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024. Ranaweera, who brings over 12 years of experience to the team, will be well-suited to the wickets in the UAE.

Sri Lanka has had a successful 18-month run, winning a series against England and South Africa for the first time in any format, in addition to their historic Asia Cup victory. They also went unbeaten in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.

Skipper Athapaththu, Sri Lanka’s top run scorer in the format, will be expected to perform in the upcoming tournament. However, other players on the team have also proven in recent months that they are more than capable of delivering game-winning performances.

Kavisha Dilhari is one such player; during the Asia Cup, she took nine wickets at an average of 12.33, ranking her as the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Madhavi, two batters who recently finished their tour of Ireland, are a terrific support to Athapaththu in the top order.

Sri Lanka is in Group A alongside Australia, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan, and they start their tournament on October 3 against Pakistan.
