Unopposed, Jay Shah is the New ICC Chairman

The current honorary secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah, has been elected the new chairman of the ICC, unopposed with a unanimous decision. The new chairman of the ICC will take office on December 1, 2024.

Greg Barclay, the current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), announced on August 20 that he would not run for a third consecutive term and would step down in November.

Shah will be the youngest to lead the ICC at 35. His term will run for three years, although it can be extended for an additional three. Shah has been the BCCI secretary since 2019, but now he has to resign from that position.

Shah was the only candidate for the chair, according to the ICC, and it has been discovered that a few sets of nominations were submitted on his behalf by the 16 current directors. According to the rules of the ICC, the paperwork does not have to be filed by the candidate itself.

With cricket slated to compete in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, Shah announced his goal of increasing cricket’s global popularity. He sees this as a critical juncture for the game’s development.

After being selected for the new ICC chairman post, Shah shared his views: “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council.”

“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

“While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways.”
