In high-scoring T20 matches, no total ever looks to be enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad stuns the Mumbai Indians with a successful chase at Wankhede Stadium. With the scoreboard pushing against Mumbai, they were on the wrong side of history despite Ryan Rickelton’s record innings as they lost from a tension flaring chase that came up 243 short.
Standout performer of the night was Rickelton, smashing 123 not off only 55 deliveries. His innings of fearless stroke play and clean hitting was the highest individual score by a Mumbai Indians player (in an innings) at IPL. Mumbai, helped by a brisk 46 from Will Jacks, raced out of the blocks and could’ve required just five powerplay overs to make it two games in a row. The team appeared well on its way to an even larger total after barreling past 200 in the 16th over, but a tight showing from Hyderabad’s bowlers at the death prevented further damage.
Sunrisers Hyderabad came into the chase of 244 with little pressure. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were aggressive from the first ball, right from the start of the opening overs putting Mumbai bowlers under pressure. Such was the impact of their explosive partnership, that they changed gears entirely and scored 129 runs off just 66 balls while taking apart even the most experienced bowlers. For Mumbai, the dew factor only compounded matters further as grip and control become a lot more difficult to ascertain.
Mumbai had a glimmer of hope when 4 wickets fell in quick succession, which brought Hyderabad down from the dominant position to one where they looked slightly shaky. But Heinrich Klaasen was not going to let them collapse. Building on his good form this season, Klaasen played a steady but attacking innings ending up [unbeaten] at 65 off 30 balls. Despite the pressure, he kept finding boundaries to keep the score-rate down.
Salil Arora put the icing on the cake towards the end when he added a quick 20 runs to finish it eleven balls left. Hyderabad looked supremely confident and his gleeful hitting included a no-look six.
Even Mumbai bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah could not control the flow of runs as such high-scoring batting conditions are difficult for bowlers. Ultimately, this match evolved into a showcase of batting skill, one that saw the forces of Hyderabad overwhelm even the fleeting threat of individual history.
