England Defeated India by Five Wickets in First Test, Take a 1-0 Series Lead

Following five days of hard work and much skepticism regarding the choice to bat first, England defeated India by five wickets. In the last hour, they reached a target of 371 runs at Headingley, and yet another crazy England side under Ben Stokes can add yet another story to their catalogue of bravery.

Despite many highs and few self-inflicted lows in England’s ultra-aggressive approach, their thrilling win over India in which they chased 371 to win the first Test showed a much more refined style of what might be called ‘Bazball’ and might lead to a great year for England.

Most of the runs scored by the openers were so important throughout the day, with Ben Duckett scoring 149 and Zak Crawley playing a very conservative role in scoring the slowest half century of his life, finishing with 65 off 126, in an opening stand of 188. At the beginning of the day, England still needed to win by 351 runs.

In quick succession, Crawley and Ollie Pope, who both made centuries in the first innings, fell first to Prasidh Krishna in consecutive overs and then to Shardul Thakur in consecutive deliveries. Duckett and Harry Brook were taken out in deliveries to complete a hat-trick.

Perhaps one of the biggest shocks of the game was that England, and a pitch that didn’t crack until the very end, really withstood India’s ace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, who ended up with no wickets in the fourth innings.

However, an aggressive opening partnership of 188 runs between Duckett and 65-run Zak Crawley ended this historic chase, the second-largest chase in England’s history after they beat India by chasing 378 at Edgbaston three years ago.

Earlier in the match, India built a challenging first-innings total with key contributions from Rishabh Pant (134 dismissing the England attack) and Shubman Gill (147). Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone with a century at the start of the innings, but KL Rahul went for 42, Ben Stokes sent Sai Sudarshan on a duck, as the wickets fell at inopportune times. India ended their first innings with a total of 471, Josh Tongue dismissing Ravindra Jadeja for 11 and Karun Nair with a duck from Ben Stokes, which could have made a difference if there had been no wickets at certain times.

In comparison, this was more strategic than many of England’s recent antics in seeking to rearrange the Test match by slogging in a style that came off as often as it failed.

The arrival of Brendon McCullum as coach with big-hitting captain Stokes drove a rise in the use of the word “Bazball” to describe not only the new style of playing test cricket.

Apart from some notable results, a team that had previously won one of its last 17 Test Matches could achieve a result at breakneck speed that is foreign to Test cricket.

Players accepted that their first duty was entertainment, and criticism emerged for their bold style, which seemed overly relaxed, most notably during 2023 Ashes, in which the team drew the series with several opportunities to win matches.

After the win, Ben Stokes said, “That partnership [off 188] Duckett and Crawley got us off to set us up brilliantly. Ducky got the big score, but Zak stayed composed and in the moment, and his 65 was important.”
